Save the Grain
We are Save the Grain, a project based at
the University of Cologne and part of the international student initiative Enactus.
Our project focuses on the reduction of crop loss in Sub-Saharan Africa. By providing information,
support and creating innovative devices such as a Solar Dryer and storage opportunities for the
farmers’ harvest, we hope to decrease the loss of harvest and provide the farmers with
opportunities and independence. Specifically, we are currently active in Togo and Guinea-Bissau.
The focus is not on expanding food production, but on minimizing crop losses and increasing storability.
To this end, we have developed a low-tech, low-cost, solar-powered dryer. In
combination with hermetically sealable storage bags, farmers thus secure a higher harvest
yield on the one hand through the increased efficiency and on the other hand, they gain
flexibility and independence from middlemen and price fluctuations thanks to the new storage
options.
Ultimately, we work together with farmers for a more independent and secure life.
